Think you can, and you will. Those famous words ring true till today. There’s a giant magnetic field force enveloping our planet – and we have a compass to point North. All animals e.g. migratory birds, whales know where they’re going, sometimes traversing thousands of miles. Could it be, just possibly, that we have an internal compass too? Imagine having a purpose magnet that draws people in. All great leaders innately know where true North lies – and they’re able to galvanise vast armies of men. From Sun Tzu to Hitler, the Wright Bros to Martin Luther King and our modern day Obama’s, people could relate to their cause – and they often wanted a better world for all, asking a lot of Why Nots along the way.
A leader is not a rank, it’s something earned, trust to be precise – and along with it, a mandate to put others, and their interests, first. Not easy. It follows that leaders exist at every level of the organisation. There isn’t a job description. Rather, it’s a cult-like following, almost religious. There’s no faking it. It’s impossible. Until you’re inspired yourself, you can’t inspire others. But it’s also why a lot of people “plateau” early and burn out. Pure greed and climbing the corporate ladder – we find that effort is commensurate to returns earlier in our careers. Those with better education and privileged backgrounds, they might find themselves getting a “headstart”. Remember those milking rounds in the early 90s from the Investment Banks, those were the good times. Then most find they hit a “purpose barrier” in their later/career years, where the last mile to summit Everest is akin to getting the coveted C suite job etc. Then these folks find that no amount of technical prowess, industry know how (fill in the perceived advantage here) suffices. This is the plateau. To put it differently, some that do ascend to the perennial top job, find it even harder to maintain.
